Richard von Mises
(1883-1953) (Younger brother of Ludwig von Mises.)
American mathematician and aerodynamicist who notably advanced statistics and
the theory of probability. Fundamental advances in boundary-layer-flow theory
and airfoil design. He was leading a team which constructed a 600-horsepower
plane for the Austro-Hungarian army in 1915, joined the army and piloted that
aircraft (in WWI). He was director of the new Institute of Applied Mathematics
at the University of Berlin. In 1933, being not of Aryan descent, had to leave
to Turkey. In 1939 moved to United States.
