Lviv Lvov Lwow Lemberg Famous People

When, in 1998, I first started collecting names of famous Leopolitans, I was amazed that my hometown has given rise to many more people, notable in literature, arts, sciences, philosophy and so on, than would be expected for a city of such modest size and population. Many of those people were 'famous everywhere but there city hometown'.

The names below comprise a list of people who were born in Lvov-Lviv-Lwow-Lemberg or whose activities were closely related to this city. Any list of such people is certain to be incomplete, but let's try..

Andrey (Andrei) Sheptytsky

Andrey (Andrei) Sheptytsky

(1865 -1944) He was Archbishop-Metropolitan of Lviv (Head of the Greek Catholic church ) from 1900 to 1944. He strove for greater understanding and "the movement towards church unity" between the Christian Churches of East and West. His enormous devotion to his Church has been recognized world-wide. During Nazi occupation his behavior was contradictory. He wrote to the Pope and described the atrocities and mass murder being carried out against the Jews and the local population. He also protested to Himmler himself. He issued a pastoral letter entitled "Thou Shalt Not Murder.", in which he publicly threatened "with Divine punishment" any who "shed innocent blood" to be excluded from the sacraments. At the same time he is one of several Ukrainian leaders affixing their signatures to a letter they sent to Hitler, pledging support for the "New Order" in Europe and he blessed the Waffen-SS Galicia as it sets out to do battle in 1943. But the fact is that Szeptycki hid 21 jewish children in his own cathedral, and 183 more in convents and monasteries. "Approximately 500 monks and nuns had knowledge of these facts, but in spite of the death penalty for sheltering Jews and financial rewards for all informers, none of the Metropolitan's wards fell into Nazi hands."

(1900-1992) one of the most prominent Muslim thinkers of the twentieth century. He was born Leopold Weiss in Lwow, the son of a Jewish barrister and grandson of an orthodox rabbi. In 1926, he converted to Islam and became Muhammad Asad. "The great mistake (of the fundamentalists)," he once explained, "is that most of these leaders start with the hudud, criminal punishment. This is the end result of the sharia (Islamic Law), not the beginning. The beginning is the rights of the people. There is no punishment in Islam which has no corresponding right."

Karl Radek Bernhardovich

Karl Radek Bernhardovich

(1885 - 1939) - Communist propagandist and early leader of the Communist International (Comintern). The failure of the Comintern to effect a Communist takeover in Germany contributed to the decline of Radek's influence, and in 1924 he lost his seat on the central committee of the Communist party. Expelled from the party in 1927, he was readmitted in 1929. A brilliant writer for the government newspaper Izvestia, he was also appointed to the commission that prepared the 1936 Soviet constitution. In January 1937, at the second show trial of the Great Purge, he confessed his guilt to the fabricated charge and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. There is strong evidence to suggest that he died in 1939 in a prison.

Maurice Goldhaber

Maurice Goldhaber

(1911–2011) U.S. physicist whose contributions to nuclear physics include the discovery that the nucleus of the deuterium atom consists of a proton and a neutron. The slow-neutron scattering studies he made in 1937 were essential to the development of the first nuclear reactors. In 1938, with his wife, Gertrude Scharff Goldhaber (also a physicist), he demonstrated that electrons and beta rays are the same. In 1940 he discovered that beryllium is a good moderator (a material that slows down fast neutrons so they more readily split uranium atoms), and it has since been widely used in nuclear reactors.
President Clinton named Maurice Goldhaber as the winner of the Enrico Fermi Award, given for a lifetime of achievement in the field of nuclear energy.
